Scalability Is Sending a Message

In November 2015, Bitcoin was worth some $450. The vast majority of nowadays problems related to the world of cryptocurrencies remained either totally unknown and unpredictable or had been a province of few cryptographic geeks. By the way, it was blockchain developer Joseph Poon and Thadeus Dryja, Ph.D. in cryptographic primitives and network security at the University of Virginia who (i) prominently spelled out the main alarming limitations of the Bitcoin network in commercial and technical regards and (ii) suggested the solution for these issues is to be found off-chain and only off-chain.

In fact, they contributed to the discussion that would later be called an ‘ideological battle over Bitcoin’s future’ – the Bitcoin scalability problem debate. While the understanding of both realized and proposed ways of this problem’s solution requires a high-degree knowledge in applied maths and coding, the problem itself can be described in a nutshell.

Initially, one block size in the Bitcoin network is limited to 1 MB. As the quantity and amount of transactions grow, it is not enough anymore. Confirmations time-outs are getting longer, while the transaction fees are getting higher. It results in the loss of commercial attractiveness of Bitcoin solutions since no one prefers to pay more and wait more. The situation has to be resolved as it is about the future of both the applied and theoretical dimensions of blockchain.

Obvious Problems, Controversial Solutions

On the face of it, there are two mainstream ways to solve the Bitcoin scalability problem. Adepts of first way proceed from the understanding that the block size is the only limitation to the transaction throughput. So, they say, this limit is to be increased if not removed once and for all. During the years 2015, 2016 and 2017, a series of solutions of this kind was proposed by the Bitcoin developers community. Among the successful are Bitcoin hard-forks, namely Bitcoin XT, Bitcoin Classic, Bitcoin Unlimited and the most popular and viable, Bitcoin Cash. In accordance with their rules, the block size was expended, at first, to 2 MB. Now, the last Bitcoin Cash core update released on May 15, 2018, allows to enlarge the block size up to 32 MB. This process itself generating controversy and anxiety in the world crypto society was followed by the cascade of partially successful ‘agreements’ (Hong Kong, New York etc.) through which the fractions in Bitcoin community tried to implement a new consensus on mining, thus allowing to enlarge the block size to 2 MB.

The very popular Segregated Witness or SegWit solution is a Bitcoin soft-fork, allowing to increase the block size in another way. It splits the transaction into two segments, removing the unlocking signature (“witness” data) from the original portion and appending it as a separate structure at the end. After that, the block (‘on-chain’) size is increased as  signatures are ‘expelled’ from the blockchain. Since the volume of signatures is some half of the full transaction volume, the limit for the block size with the SegWit is around 1.8 MB. SegWit also addresses the issues with malleability. Signatures are impossible to change after being moved out of the transaction data. Marked as a ‘clever hack’ by the Bitcoin Magazine, the SegWit is now among the most popular Bitcoin scalability solutions. Activated on August 24, 2017, with the Bitcoin block number 481 824, SegWit reached the 10 per cent market penetration in two months. Now every 2 of 5 Bitcoin transactions are handled via SegWit. And that is really a lot.

Adherents of the second way suppose that the increase of the volume of the block is only a poor remedy for the Bitcoin network scalability problem. According to them, the pivotal problem is blockchain overload, so, the transactions should be conducted without the use of blockchain as it was generally accepted up to nowadays. They observed that some transactions can be handled ‘above’ the blockchain, or, if you will, on the second layer. So, the proponents of this approach stuck to the ‘Second Layer’ solutions.

Unloading The Blockchain

The Lightning Network ideologists Ј. Poon and T. Dryja asked in their whitepaper: “If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” They compared the transaction between our familiar Alice and Bob to a tree in the forest. “…if only two participants care about an everyday recurring transaction, it’s not necessary for all other nodes in the Bitcoin network to know about that transaction. It is instead preferable to only have the bare minimum of information on the blockchain”, they declared.

There’s a plenty of Lightning Network schemes in the Internet, I had a hard time finding a clear one for you. Have a look: only two peers know the full information about the transaction with only critical data saved in the blockchain.

To put it at its plainest, in the Lightning Network, if Alice and Bob come to the agreement that the tree fell down at 2:45 PM, it is true without regard to public opinion. Their agreement that before the transaction Alice had 0.5 BTC and Bob had 0.4 ВТС, then after the transaction, Alice owned 0.6 BTC and Bob should content himself with 0.3 BTC, is secured by the hash-time lock contract. This transaction is atomic: it is to be finished only in case of bilateral recognition. Thus, there is no way for fraudulent payments: if the transaction is not broadcast within the timeframe defined in the contract, then it is considered null and void. The channel the transaction is sent through is live only for the time of the swap.

From The Idea to Mainnet: Lightning Solutions Development

Unlike the Rayden second-scale solution for the Ethereum ecosystem, which is solely developed by Brainbot Labs, there is a couple of teams working on Lightning Network in parallel. Moreover, the commercial and non-commercial implementations of Lightning are being developed separately. Non-commercial implementation of Lightning is researched by Digital Currency Initiative of MIT Media Lab (project LIT). Commercial implementations are being developed by Blockstream (project Lightning Charge, see the wide range of specifications proposed by Rusty Russel, one of the most well-known Lightning contributors), Lightning Labs (project lnd) and ACINQ (project Éclair). Now, every abovementioned team presented the beta version for the developers and those who would like to test its features with a dummy amount of coins. The up-to-date condition of the Lightning Network connections worldwide can be found here. At the time of publication, it consists of 2699 nodes and 7403 channels with a total capacity of $0.6M.

Sasha Noxon, programmer, website developer.

What determined your personal development as a programmer and developer?

The market as such. From the age of 16, I accepted orders on Freelance.ru. I was engaged in everything that brought money. I will not be revealing a secret when I say that mostly it was business websites and online stores.

What projects can you be proud of from those days?

First of all, the website https://pozvonim.com — a feedback widget for sites. In second place, perhaps, the copywriting exchange noxon-text. It no longer functions now.

You said “programmer”. And you can call yourself an entrepreneur?

Of course, I am an entrepreneur. In this regard, I was interested in the blog Spryt.ru back in the day. It was run by a schoolboy earning from advertising on his websites. At the same time, for me there is no division, or an evolution of some kind. I was the creator of websites, worked for a guy, then grew up and became an entrepreneur. No, at different periods of my life I could earn more both from my own projects, and from work for others. I do not think that this is a linear process.

The most predictable question. How did you get to blockchain? What about it attracted you?

It began with an interest in Bitcoin in 2012. As trivial as it sounds, I was attracted to the idea of ​​a free internet currency. Free in terms of emissions, in terms of movement. This is not something that Russia or the US can block. This is more understandable money for me.

So you’re cryptoanarchist?

By no means. I respect cryptoanarchists, I’m interested in them, they are cheerful dudes. But I never considered myself as one of them. Anarchy is not the final state of affairs that the world of cryptocurrencies strives to. On the contrary, anarchy is inadmissible in it.

In which projects you have worked?

Until 2016, I was rather an explorer, not a practitioner. You can learn more about this in my Github. Mostly, I investigated the practical application of smart contracts, IPFS technologies, the properties of ERC-20 tokens. Since 2017, I have headed DAO Casino as a technical director.

“I am not expecting any owners of oil companies”

You saw a huge number of block projects. What good and bad tendencies of 2018 can you name?

It is best to start with the good, isn’t it? (laughs) People had just started understanding cryptocurrencies — what is good and what is bad. They started believing less, and thinking more. Even more important is that the exchanges are now releasing their own tokens, and this leads the macroeconomics of cryptocurrencies to a new level. The model works worse when someone is sitting on commissions from exchange platforms, which they once created. The profitability of the product tokens, in particular the crypto exchanges, depends on the quality of their work, and this is much more important for the community as a whole. Finally, it’s very cool that people are starting to pay attention to cross-chain projects (like Lightning network).

But even unpleasant things are still common. First of all, this is the inertia of investors who cannot affect the teams that they have entrusted their money to. It’s no secret that before the advent of the ICO, the motivation of the team is very high, but new motivation is needed after a successful crowdfunding campaign. In this regard, a large influx of Ether into the industry has served it poorly, as some have been spoiled, others have been deceived. Maybe this is why really big investors are not yet in a hurry to enter this sector…

Another trend! And who is a big investor for you? Where did he get the money?

Investors in this case, above all, are people who have made money on the 2013 and 2017 cryptocurrency boom. It is them first and foremost. The rate of Ether has grown, and they have a lot of money, that’s all.

And, for example, old fat cats, owners of oil companies and others? If you say “big investors are in no hurry” when should we be waiting them?

Look, I do not even think about it. You do not need to think about it. It’s unproductive to wait for these people. The worst thing is that even worthy products from strong teams are now finding it harder to raise the money necessary.

I will tell you another trend, it is neither good nor bad. Now there are a lot of funny ICOs, where people work “as fans”. They just like the idea, it cheers them up, and they invest money in it. These people do not hope for a large income in the foreseeable future from their purchased tokens. It’s something like donating money in games.

So you say “worthy project”, “cool project”? And which projects are the best?

All off-chain and cross-chain ones, especially those that work directly with Bitcoin, which for me remains number 1. Well, and decentralized exchanges with their coins. The future belongs to them, I will not tire of repeating it.

Are there bad projects?

There are no such projects. I will not be hating any projects. Whoever gets the money is good, and they are awaited on the market. And it is good as long as they get the money. Nothing new compared to the “old” economy.

“It is always difficult with strong people”

You directed many projects. Who are you recruiting?

This is very difficult! (laughs). Always in different ways, depends on the task.

No, we need an answer to this question. Let us take another avenue of approach. What is the main principle of your relationship with the team?

Our principles of interaction and payment are published on the site, they can be found. The policy of payment necessarily implies the payment of a part of the work with the tokens of the project.

I am an adherent of a cautious approach to the freedom of the employee and his schedule. With strong people it’s always difficult. Strong people are hard to force to work for a common cause. You cannot force a strong programmer to do what you need, but it’s not interesting to him. Of course, a lot can be achieved with money, many are motivated by it, but in the case of really strong people, we are talking about absolutely non-market amounts.

If I pay a lot, then the person works well, and he is interesting to me, and I’m interested in him. It’s the other way around if I pay little.

Are there any categories of people you will not work with or will you quickly fire?

There are. The most dangerous people, whom I will never tolerate, are those who do not adequately assess their competence in different areas of the case, and seek to tell others how to work correctly. You have not done any of “your” tasks, but you are already advising one guy, giving orders to the second one, and criticizing a third! Such people, fortunately, are becoming a rarity, but they are very toxic to the team. As for everything else, everything is trite — I do not like lazy people, who must be constantly kicked, dreamers, projectors, etc. I do not believe in evolution here, by and large. If a person is not a professional, you will not be able to turn him into a professional, or even an average performer.

How and when did the idea of ​​Swap.Online appear? Probably, you will not even be bale to mention an exact date…

On the contrary (opens the computer). On November 22, 2017, in Facebook, I laid out the design of how to exchange a token for Bitcoin. Then I described this as a possible solution for exchanging fiat money and Bitcoin for the tokens of decentralized applications. I made my post in one of the Telegram chats for enthusiasts of the Ethereum blockchain. After some time, an investor wrote to me and said that he saw this text, and some of my smart contracts, and that he liked these ideas. Within a few months, we agreed on the terms, signed the agreement and I left the previous team.

Are not you afraid that by spreading these thoughts in FB that the idea of ​​the project will be simply stolen by someone who is cunning and technically savvy?

No. Open Source in this case is the same as publishing the idea of the likes of ​​”I’m building a house, it has walls and a roof, as well as five floors and an entrance.” Nothing more. The implementation has nothing to do with this, and it will never suffer.

Well, at that time, in terms of implementation, were there some alternatives besides Swap.Online?

No. It was the only way.

We are young. Unavoidable explosive growth can demotivate the team. But I already faced this in 2013 and 2017, and I derived an important rule from those events, and that is that you need to have global goals and never stop even if everything is very straightforward.

There is nothing like that.

Что сформировало тебя как программиста и разработчика?

Рынок как таковой. С 16 лет я брал заказы на Freelance.ru Занимался там всем, что приносило деньги. Я не открою секрета, преимущественно, это сайты-визитки, интернет-магазины.

Каким проектами того времени ты можешь гордиться?

Прежде всего, это сайт https://pozvonim.com – виджет обратной связи для сайтов. На втором месте, пожалуй, биржа копирайтинга noxon-text. Она уже не функционирует сейчас.

Ты сказал “программист”. А ты можешь назвать себя предпринимателем?

Безусловно, я предприниматель. В этом плане меня в своё время заинтересовал блог Spryt.ru – его вёл, школьник зарабатывающий продажей рекламы на своих сайтах. Вместе с тем, для меня не существует разделения, эволюции какой-то: “Я был создателем сайтов, работал на дядю, потом вырос и стал предпринимателем”. Нет, в разные периоды своей жизни я мог зарабатывать больше как с собственных проектов, так и с работы в чужих. Не считаю, что это какой-то линейный процесс.

Самый предсказуемый вопрос. Как ты пришел в блокчейн? Чем он тебя привлёк?

Началось с интереса к биткоину в 2012 году. Как бы банально это ни звучало, привлекла идея свободной интернет-валюты. Свободной в плане эмиссии, в плане перемещения. Это не то, что может заблокировать Россия или США. Более понятные деньги для меня.

Получается, ты криптоанархист?

Ни в коем случае. Уважаю криптоанархистов, интересуюсь ими, весёлые чуваки. Но никогда себя к ним не относил. Конечное состояние, к которому стремится мир криптовалют – не анархия. Наоборот, анархия в нём недопустима.

В каких блокчейн-проектах ты работал?

До 2016 года я скорее был исследователем, а не практиком. У меня в гитхабе можно больше узнать об этом. Преимущественно, я исследовал вопросы практического применения смарт-контрактов, технологий IPFS, свойства ERC-20-токенов. С 2017 года я возглавил DAO Casino в качестве технического директора.

“Владельцев нефтяных фирм я не жду”

Ты видел огромное число блокчейн-проектов. Какие хорошие и плохие тенденции 2018 года ты можешь назвать?

Начать, наверное, стоит с хороших? (смеется) Люди только-только начали разбираться в криптовалютах –  что хорошо, а что плохо; меньше стали верить, а больше думать. Теперь явным скамам очень трудно что-либо собрать, не стоит и пытаться. Ещё важно, что биржи теперь выпускают собственные токены, это выводит макроэкономику криптовалют на новый уровень. Уже хуже работает модель, когда кто-то сидит на комиссии с обменов сайта, который он когда-то создал. Рентабельность токена продукта, в частности – криптовалютной биржи – зависит от качества её работы, а это гораздо важнее для сообщества в целом. Наконец, очень круто, что люди стали обращать внимание на кросс-чейновые проекты.

Но и неприятные вещи всё ещё остаются массовыми. В первую очередь это инертность инвесторов, которые никак не могут повлиять на команды, которым доверили свои деньги. Не секрет, что до ICO мотивация команды очень высокая, но после успешного краудфандинга нужна новая мотивация. В этом плане большой приток эфира в индустрию сослужил ей плохую службу, кого-то разбаловал, кого-то обманул. Может, из-за этого по-настоящему крупные, крутые инвесторы ещё не торопятся идти в эту сферу…

Ещё одна тенденция! А кто для тебя крупный инвестор? Откуда у него деньги?

Инвесторы здесь, прежде всего, это люди, поднявшиеся на криптовалютном буме 2013 и 2017 года. В первую очередь, это именно они. Эфир вырос – и денег у них стало много, вот и всё.

А, к примеру, старые fat cats, владельцы нефтяных фирм и прочие? Если ты говоришь “крупные инвесторы не торопятся” – когда таких ждать?

Слушай, я даже не думаю об этом. Не нужно думать об этом. Ждать этих людей точно непродуктивно. Самое плохое, что даже стоящим продуктам у сильных команд теперь тяжелее собрать необходимые деньги.

Назову тебе ещё тенденцию, она не хорошая и не плохая. Сейчас много веселых ICO, куда люди идут “по фану”. Просто им нравится идея, она их веселит, и они вкладывают деньги. Не надеются эти люди на большой доход в обозримом будущем с купленных токенов. Что то вроде доната для игр.

Вот ты говоришь “стоящий проект”, “крутой проект”? А какие проекты сейчас самые крутые?

Весь офф-чейн и кросс-чейн, особенно те, что работают напрямую с биткоином, который для меня остается номером 1. Ну, и децентрализованные биржи со своими монетами. Будущее – за ними, не устану повторять.

А некрутые, плохие проекты?

Нет таких. Хейтить проекты не буду. Кому несут деньги, тот и хорош, того и ждут на рынке. И он хорош до тех пор, пока ему их несут. Ничего нового по сравнению со “старой” экономикой.

“С сильными людьми всегда сложно”

Ты руководил многими проектами. Кого ты набираешь в команду?

С этим очень сложно! (смеется). Всегда по-разному, зависит от задачи.

Я приверженец осторожного подхода к свободе сотрудника и его графика. Пока человек работает хорошо, пока у него много ответственности, и он нас не подводит – я готов дать ему возможность работать там, где он захочет и столько, сколько он захочет. По мере снижения объема ответственности, конкретизации задач, человек должен переходить в офис, трудиться на своём участке так, чтобы я и другие его видели.

С сильными людьми всегда сложно. Сильных людей тяжело заставить работать над общим делом. Сильного программиста ты не заставишь делать то, что надо тебе, но не интересно ему. Деньгами, конечно, многого можно добиться, многих мотивировать, но в случае с действительно сильными людьми это будут абсолютно нерыночные суммы. Есть ли категории людей, с которыми ты не будешь работать никогда или быстро уволишь?

Есть. Самые опасные люди, которых я никогда не буду терпеть, это те, кто неадекватно оценивает свою компетентность в разных областях дела, и стремится указывать другим, как им правильно работать. У тебя не сделана ни одна “твоя” задача, а ты уже первому посоветовал, второму приказал, третьего раскритиковал! Таких людей, к счастью, становится всё меньше, но они очень токсичны для коллектива. В остальном, всё банально – лентяев не люблю, которых надо постоянно пинать, фантазёров, прожектёров и т.д. В эволюцию здесь  не верю, по большому счёту. Если человек не профессионал, ты не вырастишь из него профессионала, да даже и среднего исполнителя.

“Swap.Online – единственный путь”

Как и когда появилась идея Swap.Online? Наверное, уже и не назовёшь точной даты…

Напротив (открывает компьютер). 22 ноября 2017 года в Facebook я выложил дизайн того, как должен осуществляться обмен токена на биткоин. Тогда я описал это как возможное решение для обмена фиатных денег и биткоина на токены децентрализованных приложений. Я закинул свой пост в один из телеграм-чатов с энтузиастами блокчейна Ethereum. Через какое-то время мне написал инвестор и сказал, что видел этот текст, и какой-то из моих смарт-контрактов, и что эти идеи ему понравились. В течении нескольких месяцев мы договорились об условиях, подписали соглашение и я ушёл из прежней команды.

Неужели ты не боялся, выкладывая эти мысли в ФБ, что идею проекта просто украдёт кто-то ушлый и технически подкованный?

Нет. Open Source в данном случае – это то же самое, что опубликовать идею “Строю дом, в нём есть стены и крыша, а также пять этажей и вход”. Ничего больше. Реализация никак с этим не связана, и пострадать она не может.

Хорошо, а на тот момент в плане реализации были какие-то альтернативы помимо Swap.Online?

Нет. Это был единственный путь.

Но ведь централизованные обменники до какого-то момента всех устраивали? Когда ты понял, что время децентрализации пришло?

Знаешь, они и сейчас почти всех устраивают. DEX – технологии завтрашнего дня, если не послезавтрашнего.

Пришёл черед смелого прогноза от Александра Ноксона. Когда оборот децентрализованных обменников превзойдет оборот централизованных?

В 2019 году.

Очень скоро! Какие проблемы централизованных бирж тогда решит твой Swap.Online?

Во-первых, это заморозки средств в видах политики KYC/AML. На многих сайтах такого рода, к примеру – на корейской бирже Bithumb, ты можешь завести сколько угодно средств, а чтобы вывести – у тебя попросят много документов, которые ты не всегда можешь направить. Когда ты заводишь деньги, ты не знаешь, дадут ли тебе их забрать в следующий раз.

Во-вторых, это скорость обмена. Недалек тот час, когда никто не захочет ждать по 10-15 минут для обмена эфира в биткоин. Одна-две минуты – вот то, что мы предлагаем своим пользователям.

В третьих, это надежность. Мы не храним ваши деньги, у нас нельзя что-то взломать и их украсть. Есть другие риски, по ним ведется работа, например риск с захватом домена, в этом случае могут пострадать зашедшие пользователи, но мы обязательно сделаем изолированные десктопные приложения.

Всё это увенчивается ставкой нашей транзакционной комиссии. Она составляет ноль процентов. Очень легко запомнить. Mining fee – 20 центов.

Впечатляет. Кто же твоя целевая аудитория?

Ну, прежде всего, ходлеры. Это такие участники криптовалютного рынка, которые склонны долгое время держать свои активы, не участвуя в краткосрочной биржевой торговле. Как правило, у них много крипты и они боятся заводить её на классические централизованные биржи. Причины я изложил выше.

Кроме этого, к нам придут высокоинформированные люди, гики блокчейна. Им важна технологическая сторона обмена и они склонны пользоваться передовыми технологиями, которые мы предложим.

А кто удивит тебя, придя на Swap.Online? Кто “нецелевая” аудитория?

Интересно, не думал над этим. Наверное, корпоративные финансовые клиенты. Вот “Альфа-банк”, к примеру, удивит, когда рекламу размещать придёт.

Теперь три коротких вопроса о твоем проекте. В чём его самая слабая сторона?

Мы молоды. Неизбежный взрывной рост может демотивировать команду. Но я уже сталкивался с этим в 2013 и 2017 году из чего вынес важное правило – нужно иметь глобальные цели и не останавливаться даже если прямо все очень круто.

Есть ли у него предел масштабируемости, конечная пропускная способность или что-то в этом роде?

Ничего такого нет.

Давай в конце немного поговорим о будущем. Может ли блокчейн изменить мир, и, если может, то в какую сторону?

И да, и нет. С одной стороны, очень хорошо, что многие люди заинтересовались биткоином в 2017 году, завели кошельки, купили монеты. Их жизнь станет более благополучной, разумной и интересной, и это очень круто. С другой стороны, каких-то фундаментальных проблем планеты Земля технологии блокчейна сами по себе решить не могут.

Побудь Айзеком Азимовым. Вот сейчас есть блокчейн, завтрашний день – кросс-чейн и офф-чейн. А что потом? Что дальше?

Я думаю, на каком-то этапе в этом всём будут задействованы квантовые компьютеры, технологии четвертого измерения, искривление времени. Описать это сейчас очень трудно. Наверное, все начнется именно с квантовых компьютеров.

Последний на сегодня вопрос. Настал тот день, когда ты устал от криптовалюты и блокчейна. Что ты будешь делать в этот день?

해커톤(Hackathon)은 어땠을까⚡라이트닝 네트워크 핵데이(Hackday)

IT 스타트업은 손해가 발생하고 있거나 현재 사업이 진행되지 않을 수 있는 상황에도 수조원의 가치를 가질 수 있습니다. 회사의 미래에 있어 투자자들의 믿음이 바로 그 이유인데요. 믿음의 까닭은 모두에게 해당될 수 있는 것이죠.

  • 누군가는 회사의 마케팅 능력을 믿습니다. 최고의 제품을 꼭 가질 필요는 없지만 팀이 모두가 사용하게 만들 수 있다면(예를 들어 Whatsapp 메신저와 같이), 메신저 사용자들이 다른 이들(쉽게 다른 사람에게 연락할 수 있으니까요)을 위해 가치를 창조할 것이며, 더 많은 사용자들을 끌어들일 것입니다.

Ind CTO 와 메인 개발자(Ind CTO and the main developer)가 저희 프로젝트에 흥미를 가지게 되었습니다. 그들은 Swap,core 의 메인 개발자 Pasha Ivanov 와 함께 외부 시스템(저희의 경우 Swap.online)을 연결하는 법과 Ind를 논의하였으며, 리더와 라이트닝 네트워크를 위한 소프트웨어 개발자들이 함께하였습니다.

인증 서비스는 당신에게 지갑 만들기 및 기존 지갑을 재설정하도록 해줍니다.

주문 서비스는 그 어떤 데이터든 만들거나 저장, 삭제 그리고 요청하는 주문들을 할 수 있게 해줍니다. 이 서비스는 고객들간의 대화에서 존재하는 주문(한 글래스), 주문 상태를 변경하거나 제거하는 부분에 대해 새로운 사용자들에게 알려주기 위해 IPFS를 사용합니다.

Atomic Swaps: What’s That Like

To start with, Atomic Swap is a technology of direct trade between two different cryptocurrencies with no third parties, middlemen, intermediary tokens etc. Alice sends Bitcoins to Bob, Bob sends Litecoins to Alice. That’s it. The story is about Alice and Bob’s wallets containing cryptos, their decision to exchange, and their computers connected to their respective blockchains.

If Alice owned 5 Bitcoins, but instead wanted 100 Litecoins, and Bob owned 100 Litecoins, but instead wanted 5 Bitcoins, then Bob and Alice could make a trade. To avoid Alice’s possible cheating in accepting Bob’s 100 Litecoins, but then failing to send her 5 Bitcoins, atomic swaps utilizes what is known as hash time-locked contracts (HTLCs).

Hash time-locked contracts ensure that the atomic swap process is completely trustless by ensuring both parties fulfill the requirements of the trade. If this proof is not received within 24 hours (the timeframe depends on various factors), the money is returned to their respective owners.

That’s why this technology matters, as the trade is cancelled if only one of the two parties is unsatisfied.

Therefore, for a trade between Alice and Bob to take place, both must submit their transactions to their respective blockchains, Alice on the Bitcoin blockchain, and Bob on the Litecoin blockchain. In order for Alice to claim the 100 Litecoins sent from Bob, she must produce a number that only she knows, which is used to generate a cryptographic hash (a very long row of letters and numbers), thus providing proof of payment.

Brief History of Atomic Swaps

The idea of fully decentralized transactions comes from the very first papers written by Satoshi Nakamoto about Bitcoin (2008), and even by Nick Szabo about smart-contracts. HLTCs are a particular case (middle 1990s). The Komodo Platform, a fork of the Bitcoin team, was the pioneer of Atomic Swaps. The original idea for atomic swaps was described on the BitcoinTalk forum by forum member Tier Nolan in 2013. Komodo’s lead developer, JL777, recognized the value of the idea, built the necessary framework, and completed his first atomic swap just a year later in 2014. Since then, his team has continued to make tremendous advances in the technology.

On September 19, 2017, they executed the first Atomic Swap between two blockchains, Litecoin and Decred.

Three days later, the first Atomic Swap between the two oldest currencies, Bitcoin and Litecoin, was successfully carried out.

Cross-chain Atomic Swaps technology is now widespread on different blockchains.

Atomic Swaps: Present and Future Application

Currently, this technology is being used for sending money from one blockchain to another. For example, in Swap.Online, we use it for BTC ⇔ ETH and ERC-20 ⇔ BTC swaps. Everyone can change their cryptos in a safe and decentralized manner. You can try it yourself: just follow the instruction manual!

Research on the future of this technology is being carried out in two directions. Firstly, there are a couple of emerging solutions for executing swaps above the blockchain (second-layer scalability) e.g. Lightning Network for Bitcoin, Raiden Network, and Liquidity Network for Ethereum. They are trying to somehow solve the problem of blockchain overloads. Secondly, many researchers are trying to find commercial applications for Atomic Swaps. It is highly likely that they will be used in statistics, banking, logistics, state registers and other areas.

What can we derive from this article? The technology of Atomic Swaps is a way to transfer cryptos from one blockchain to another with the use of special smart contracts set for a limited amount of time. The technology is used for decentralized peer-to-peer cryptocurrency trading.

Raiden Network Ethereum Testnet Deployment: On The Verge of a New Era?

On July 19, 2018, the Raiden Network team announced that the product is ready for deployment in the Ropsten Ethereum testnet. Swap.Online would like to make an overview of the history and present state of the Raiden Network technology, which is considered to be the second-layer scalability solution for Ethereum network tokens and off-chain transactions, and discusses the prospects of its commercial application.

Driving transactions off-chain

As the quantity of transactions on the blockchains like Ethereum or Bitcoin started growing exponentially, it became obvious to the industry that one day, in the future, high transaction fees and long confirmation timeouts will eventually become the downfall of cryptocurrency’s evolution. The extensive solutions based on the banal increase of mining technical capacities seemed to be a feeble remedy. Thus, the only possible resolution was to transfer some part of transaction process from the blockchain in a safe and decentralized manner. After working on the problem since early 2015, the developers from Brainbot Labs Establishment presented the Roadmap of the Raiden project. It was initially planned that the series of decentralized solutions will be implemented in three stages, namely µRaiden or Micro Raiden as a service of many-to-one transfers above the Ethereum network, the Raiden Network as an advanced many-to-many payments service for ERC-20 tokens, and Raiden 2.0 (or ‘Raidos’ referring to ‘dos’ for ‘two’ in Spanish) designed to scale Ethereum’s generalized computation capabilities through a network of satellite chains, which can host any smart contract.

The path

The Raiden Network team raised great awareness the first time with the Micro Raiden, which was launched in testnet in September 2017. As the project developers said, mainly it targeted the dApps interested in ‘using the Raiden Network as a robust, many-to-one payment channel system; one service provider offering services to many recurring customers’. A more advanced and scalable solution was presumed since the very start of Micro Raiden’s implementation. It was said that Micro Raiden requires users to lock up tokens upfront for every potential payee, so, it is not suitable for many-to-many payments. The reason was the reduced technological complexity, which made a quick mainnet release of the product possible.

Apart from the technical aspects of this release, we have to admit that it was a really splendid commercial move, as the ICO of the Raiden Network was announced two days later.

At first glance, the ordinary offering of yet another utility-token set off a firestorm of debates, despite the fact that the team said they will do little to market their ICO. The team was accused of planning a ‘grab-the-cash’ ICO. When somebody asked why ETH itself cannot be used as the currency of the Raiden Network, the Reddit thread collected more than 400 comments by the time it was archived. Even Vitalik Buterin, who usually appreciates all second-layer scalability of Ethereum decisions, was defensive, albeit understanding the motivation of the Raiden Network team.

Vitalik understood the Raiden Network team’s efforts to raise some cash.

As it has already been said, the ICO of RDN was not accompanied by a remarkable media campaign. Nevertheless, after being launched on October 18 and organized on the principle of a Dutch auction, it ended on November 1 with a rather moderate amount of 109,532 ETH (about $32.75 million). The final price at which all the participants received the RDN tokens was 0.0021906 ETH per RDN. The tokens themselves immediately became available for secondary trading. In the last days of November 2017, the project team released the full version of Micro Raiden in the Ethereum main blockchain. The users met one restriction: the amount of tokens used in some project features was limited to 100 RDN. Lefteris Carapetsas, the developer of the project, wrote in his Github that the main aim of the release was to identify bugs in the code within the framework of the Raiden Network’s development process: “This is a bug bounty mainnet release. We recommend using only small amounts of RDN as channel deposits. As such, we have limited the maximum deposit to 100 RDN”.

The Raiden Network’s release on the Ropsten Testnet has been highly appreciated in the crypto world. What profits does the industry expect from this update?

Raiden Network: Features and Capabilities

It is generally believed that all second-layer Ethereum blockchain solutions (e.g. Raiden Network and its competitors, like the Liquidity Network) solve four main problems: scalability, latency, transaction fees, and privacy.

Traditional public blockchains are able to execute very low quantities of operations per second: e.g. for Ethereum this figure is some 9.6. This problem is solved in the Raiden Network by decentralized peer-to-peer mechanisms. The bigger the Raiden Network becomes, the higher its maximum throughput with the ability of growing ad infinitum.

These blockchains also work very slowly. With 15-30 seconds spent on one Ethereum block, the confirmation of some operations can take up to a couple of minutes. Raiden’s developers say that their transfers “are as fast as text messages”. The amount of coins received is transferred straight to the receiver’s wallet with no need to wait for confirmation.

The elimination of transaction fees seems to be the clearest feature of the Raiden Network. It is an odd thing to say that the transaction cost of a transfer via the blockchain is several times higher than of the one sent by a channel directly peer-to-peer. Raiden’s developers say it will be much more useful with the IoT extension surrounded by machine-to-machine payments.

Privacy issues are among the most sensitive for Ethereum users. The Raiden network foresees that only the amount of tokens sent will be shown to the entire world via the blockchain explorer without disclosing the maker and taker addresses.

Thus, the Raiden Network is designed for both for b2b and b2c commercial implementation with the latter being the focus.

What can we find there for Swap.Online?
